On Thursday June 16th, we had our Celebration for Young Women on the Move and Girls on the Run at our Crescent Town Library. Each girl brought with her a female role model (her mom, grandma) to celebrate this evening with us.

You Are Who You Are

Today we read the book, Girls Can! Make it happen by Rick Kupchella.
In this book we learned about 3 wonderful women:
Sandra Day O'Connor
Jackie Joyner-Kersee
Sally Ride

We then created a brainstorm of all of the things we feel girls are. Girls are:

  • intelligent

  • strong

  • talented

  • brave and strong

  • beautiful

  • positive

  • respectful

  • peaceful

  • cool

  • awesome

  • wonderful

Girls can...

  • sing

  • read

  • drive

  • write

  • dream

  • run

  • lead

  • do anything

  • make a difference!

We then practiced this through drama. We slowly transformed into who we visioned ourselves to be when we grow up. We then used corridor of voices to explore this.

Power and Control

On Thursday, we discussed the importance of Power and Control with Neelam.
Reactions create power and control for bullies.
We also watched It's A Girls World. For more information, click on their website below:

Bullying

Reaction

Hurt on Purpose
Over & Over Again

If the victim tries not to give the bully the reaction they want (to show hurt) and the bystanders do not give the bully attention (laughing, making comments or even just standing by doing nothing) then it makes it hard for the bully to continue to hurt over and over again.
Sometimes the bully does this because he/she was a victim themselves or because they are going through difficulty in their personal life. We want to be careful not to bully the bully, just to stop the behavior.
